NZ II

Well, two months have past already, but it feels a lot more like two days. Although the holiday craze did slow me down a little bit I still managed to see a fair share of things.
So here's a few shots from  the last few weeks!

Black Sand Beach at Raglan

Pohutukawa tree, also known as New Zealand Christmas Tree.

Lighthouse at Cape Reinga, New Zealand's northernmost point.

Manuka Forrest, Source of delicious and expensive Honey.

90 Mile beach, as the name suggests exactly 55 miles long. Officially used as a public highway.

Tane Mahuta, ancient Kauri tree, and largest still standing. The girth, circumference at breast height, is over 15 meters. The tree in total is over 42 meters tall giving it a volume of around 516 cubic meters of timber.

Important message! The ancient Waipoua forest is threatened by Kauri Dieback, a fungal disease. At the moment only some paths are open as new disinfecting stations are being built.

The Kauri Museum at Matakohe. Great place to visit!

Size comparison of some known large Kauri from the past. the innermost black ring resembles Tane Mahuta at 5.56m diameter.

And to put the age of these trees into perspective

Little Fantail

Pet Emu

Didn't realize they could be so cuddly.

However, care must be taken as they are very quick with their feet which sport inch-long  razor-sharp claws

I never knew they had such amber eyes
